Thank you for your interest in my dairy goats. Please use the link buttons at left to navigate around the SILVER HILL website. Use the E-Mail button if you have any questions about the herd or availability of stock for sale. I have been breeding French Alpines (and now Americans as well) since 1979 and was on continuous DHIR test for 20 years, from 1980 until 2000. I have had five whole-herd type appraisals, bred a Top Ten doe and some permanent champions, won Best Dairy Herd In Show at the State Fair of Virginia and bred a doe who has placed 2nd, 3rd and 3rd in milking classes at three different ADGA National Shows. We have exported numerous does and some bucks to foreign countries and have bred bucks that are working successfully in other herds. In recent years I have not been able to show as much as we used to when the children were in 4H. In the summer & fall of 2002 I sold most of the does. In late winter of 2004 I sold down to 2 milkers, in anticipation of a lengthy convalescence from surgery. In future I plan to keep only a small number so the grandchildren can have goats to show and we will continue to have milk and cheese for our family. Production: I breed does who are heavy milkers with the strong type necessary to support that production over a long lifetime. One of my foundation does for many years held the Virginia state record (all breeds) for Lifetime Production of milk and fat, and may still hold it (no one is keeping these records anymore). In 1996 one of our does gave us our first 4,000+ lb. lactation and is a 1996 ADGA Breed Leader in Milk Production. The herd's production records allowed me the opportunity for export sales of both bucks and does at high end prices. Unfortunately, after 20 years, my test group fell below the required minimum of 3 herds and we could no longer continue testing. Health: We have been practicing preventive health care for all the years we have had the goats and have selected for animals that are hardy and disease resistant. Our does have been particularly free of kidding and metabolic problems. We practice prophylactic coccidia management and a CAE control program so our kids grow out large and vigorous and are able to meet their genetic potential for production and longevity. The herd has been CAE negative for some years. The most recent test of the milkers was on blood drawn May 1, 2002, WSU ELISA, 100% negative. Breeding: Since 1986 much of my breeding has been done by Artificial Insemination, allowing me to use fine bloodlines that would not otherwise be available. In the last few years I have added the first American Alpine sires to the herd and my recent breeding has concentrated on those fine bloodlines. As of 2004 the herd is entirely American Alpine. Terms of Sale: We do not ship. All animals must be picked up at the farm. A deposit of $50 will hold a kid until it is one month old, at the price listed on this website. The deposit will be applied to the purchase price or refunded if I cannot supply the kid of your choice. Please e-mail me if you have questions.
